how the Creative Academy improved my CV
Matt Holland: Creative Academy Photographer and Bath Spa University student.
I first heard about the Creative Academy a few months ago when my university posted on Facebook about getting commercial experience as writers, photographers, designers or video artists.
As soon as I read this I was hooked. I emailed straight away and asked what I need to do and how to sign up. It was very simple and everyone was really welcoming and helpful.
What’s exciting about the work with the academy is the change in projects. One week I’ll be photographing locks and cars, the next pens, then alarms and all sorts!
And the best thing is, it’s easy to manage and work with around other activities going on since, as a freelancer, I have to do a lot of work elsewhere. But the Academy is something I enjoy coming back to for a fresh mind and to get back into photography – something I really thrive on.
Since joining the Academy, life has just gotten busier as the projects keep coming through and I advance further with work. Everything I do with them is advertised, made open to the public and sent around various clients so essentially making a name for myself and when Joe, and the other GKBC staff, sent me links to my work being used professionally, it was a proud moment. Seeing your images open to the public on a big-name website for clients was unreal.
Not only this, but the advice and feedback I have received from the team is great, it’s really helped guide and push me to be more creative with my images and be more experimental yet retain a clean, cropped style to the photos. It’s also really interesting to see other peoples work in the academy and the daily posts which I find really inspiring and lead to new ideas.
I can happily say joining the Academy has been worthwhile and I can now return for my final year at university a lot more confident about where my work is going. I feel this has been brought on with work through the academy, leading to my work being recognized and has helped me gain an internship and many more clients.
So, for anyone thinking of joining, stop thinking and just do it. You won’t regret it.
Joining the Creative Academy Has been one of the best decisions of my career so far
Jenny DiOrio: Colorado-based graphic designer
Joining The Creative Academy has already proven itself one of the best decisions of my career. Not only am I gaining valuable experience and building my portfolio, I’m also learning to broaden my horizons, building confidence in my design abilities as well as being given invaluable feedback that is helping me to strengthen my skills, learn new techniques, and create design that is viable in today’s market.
The projects are unique and there is a huge variety in what I’m assigned, which I find refreshing and which I know helps me to grow as a designer.
I also cannot say enough about the people behind The Creative Academy. The GKBC staff are so very helpful, and I get the feeling they really want to help me blossom! Joe always seems to know what project to assign to me that will help me move forward, and learn something new. It’s also a really fantastic feeling to see when my work has been published. I love that feeling of “I did that!”; it’s an enormous confidence boost!
