Once the holiday season is done and dusted, Winter is a miserable time; everyone’s skint and there are still two months of ‘hibernation’ to endure until spring starts to properly poke its nose above ground. So why not give yourself a boost by setting up your own all natural, home beauty spa for just under £5?
For your home spa, You will need:
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
home spa Face Mask
Mash up half an avocado and slather the green pulp all over your face. Apart from looking like a melted incredible Hulk action figure, the avocado will act as a deep cleansing mask that gets rid of the layers of dirt that accumulate on your skin. Avocado also contains many vitamins and minerals like zinc, vitamin A, calcium and potassium and is a good source of natural collagen (the agent responsible for elasticity levels in skin). Leave the mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse with some warm water for hydrated, radiant skin.
You could also try a face mask made from lemon juice and table spoon of honey mixed together. Many women in ancient times swore by honey to keep their complexions looking young. Honey acts as a natural anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory substance that draws impurities out of pores. Lemons too are packed with skin-cleansing properties. The vitamin c and abundance of alpha hydroxyl acids brightens and exfoliates skin and is therefore great for oily, acne-prone faces. This mask can stay on for 20 minutes but rinse well afterwards; as this one can get sticky and flies will not be able to resist your shiny, sweet-smelling face.
home spa Hair Mask
In the winter, over-washing and using too many heated styling methods can batter your hair, making it look dry and split-endy. To get some moisture back in there use half an avocado and mash it into a pulp with two tablespoons of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. When the mixture is well combined, apply to damp hair at the scalp, lengths and tips. Cover your head with a shower cap or cling film and leave the avocado to do its thing for 20 minutes, before washing with a mild shampoo. If you have coloured hair, switch the olive oil for almond oil as the olive oil may affect the dye.
Alternatively, you could try a honey and extra virgin olive oil blend on your hair. One tablespoon of honey to three tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil mixed together in a bowl and heated in a microwave for 30 seconds will tame frizz and make your locks more manageable. Wait until the mixture is cool then work it through the whole lengths of your hair. You may have to make more mixture to suit the length and thickness of your hair. Wrap your head in a shower cap or cling film and leave the mask on for one hour before shampooing.
home spa Dry Shampoo
If you are in between hair washes and your hair feels a bit lank and greasy, don’t waste your money on dry shampoo aerosols. Just sprinkle a bit of bicarbonate of soda over the roots and massage into your hair. The bicarbonate of soda will soak up the hair oil and leave your locks looking fresh once more. Just be careful you don’t put too much in or your hair may look white.
home spa Body Scrub
Baking powder can also be used to exfoliating scrub on skin that instantly brightens your dreary winter complexion. Mix some into a paste with a bit of warm water and rub in with circular motions rinsing it off thoroughly. Apply your normal moisturizer afterwards. For particularly stubborn dry skin (on heels/ elbows) mix some bicarbonate of soda with some lemon juice and leave it on for 10 minutes before washing off and applying moisturizer. You can also make a paste out of granulated sugar and water instead of baking powder, but make sure that the sugar is fully dissolved in the warm water before you apply because the grains can tear the surface of your skin.
home spa Teeth Whitener
Baking powder can even help you whiten your teeth. Make a paste with one teaspoon of baking powder and a bit of lemon juice and wipe onto the surface of your teeth. Let it sit on there for 1 minute only (any longer and the bicarbonate of soda will start to erode your tooth enamel). Then brush your teeth afterwards. You can do this treatment once every two weeks and it will start to whiten your teeth after a month or so. Mixing some bicarbonate with a mashed up strawberry also has the same effect.
There. For just £5 you can pamper your winter blues away. Now all you’ve got to complain about is getting the avocado mush out of your bath.
